I was minus 6.

Just remembered something - I read once that Milwall used to kick off on Saturdays late, to give their fans time to finish work and get to the ground (anyone else heard this?).

So, if that's true, then dockers DID use to work on Saturdays, so what this fella was saying was bollocks. Also, how old was he, do you think? He didn't look much older than 65-68 ish, ie a teenager in 1965.

Anyway, I distinctly remember the day, I was 14 and at a boarding (approved) school

Upstream from the Tower on the north side was the City, but yes, there were a few (not many) cranes still.

Yes it went upstream toward Waterloo

Re: One for the old farts: Winston Churchill
I thought the funeral boat went up stream towards Westminster.... might be wrong but I thought there was no North of the River docks after the Tower?? Happy to be proven wrong but I can't think of any??

Re: One for the old farts: Winston Churchill
What do you mean by after Tower of London, do you mean up stream or down stream?

Anyway, I think the pool of London had cranes both sides, could be wrong though

Re: One for the old farts: Winston Churchill
Eddie B 1016 - exactly what I thought. Question is how representative was he of dockers as a whole. He looked mid-60s i.e. still a teenager in 1965, would hardly have had his finger on the pulse of opinion. I wouldn't mind betting it was hearsay.

I missed out the word 'that'??

True dat Eddie.... what was the score on our side of the river? Saying don't think there was any docks our side of the river after Tower of London??

Where were the cranes - south side of the river. Tells you everything you need to know.

Has anyone heard that docker's story before? I haven't.

Far Cough 8:42 Thu Jan 29
Re: One for the old farts: Winston Churchill
That docker's story has tainted the day for me, and I don't believe all of them were anti Churchill at all

Northern sold 12-03
The hardened trade unionists wanted hanging upside down in the Thames from their cranes, wanted paying because it was Saturday!? Lazy bastards & no good shit houses!!

Re: One for the old farts: Winston Churchill
Not sure where you got my interpretation ..... I am more pro Churchill than many on here ..... Visited cabinet war rooms and Chartwell etc in homage ... I think you are missing the point ... My dad was allowed an opinion .... I dud tv say I agreed with it and even he still did much more than I would.

bubbsio 12:20 Thu Jan 29
Re: One for the old farts: Winston Churchill
Not questioning your Dads views, just your interpretation, still no bad thing. Churchill became prime minister if a country already at war and lead us to victory rather than surrender, invasion and occupation. So yes, he probably was a warmonger but there was quite a good reason.

JohnnyL 12:13 Thu Jan 29
Re: One for the old farts: Winston Churchill
Bloody hell ... Anyone else want to question my dad who went to war aged 18 and returned to East London aged 23 a very different person. He paid his respects to Churchill - who I have great respect for - but lost many of his friends and still worked till his death .... It was his view but he fought for his country like so many others
